I Need Another Miracle
By Jason Lohr
The young woman had no pulse and no blood pressure. Without intervention she would be dead within 30 minutes. She had been in labor for more than a day at a small clinic and was referred to our hospital because she was bleeding profusely. Next to the stretcher a bag of blood dripped into her arm, but she would need much more blood to save her life.
I was unable to hear the baby’s heartbeat and assumed it was dead. My goal now was to save the mother’s life, so I prayed to God to help me. Like every day in our hospital, we needed a miracle.
The woman’s family, wearing traditional Muslim gowns, stood anxiously beside the stretcher. They had come to our Christian hospital because they hoped we could help. I prayed that God would show them that Jesus could perform a miracle.
I explained to the family that we needed three more bags of blood and that the patient needed surgery to remove the baby and stop the bleeding. They would need to donate the blood themselves since we never have enough in our blood bank.
We rushed the patient to the operating room, inserted another IV into her arm, and started surgery. I cut the umbilical cord and removed the baby’s limp body. I was startled to feel him move. I handed him to the nurse who immediately began giving oxygen and compressions. I didn’t hear the baby crying as I finished the surgery, so I assumed he was dead. To my surprise and relief, the nurse reported that the baby was fine.
As I walked out to the corridor, the family was waiting to hear the news. I was excited to tell them that both the mother and baby were alive. They broke into cheers, jumping up and down in unison. The sense of joy I felt cannot be explained. God performed another miracle today.
