The Neighborhood Kids' Club

My husband, Rob, accepted a call to the Guam Seventh-day Adventist Clinic in August 2007. As a family we wanted to do a work for Jesus while on this island, and decided that a neighborhood kids' club would be an awesome outreach. Our kids' club has met on Wednesdays since spring 2008. We decided this past October to extend our "scheduled" time with the kids by providing a meal and having a Bible study.
Each Wednesday at 4 p.m. we have 8 to 21 kids come to our house for Kids' Club; a Bible story, singing, games, baking, and fun. Our sons, Christopher (12), and Jacob, (10) participate in the club while Robby (16) and Benjamin (15) help out with the baking and games. Around 5:30, Benjamin starts preparing the meal for those who stay for the Bible study. Robby and Benjamin arrange the filled plates around our dinner and patio tables. When Rob comes home from work we start the Bible study. Then we have time for questions. We have had some great discussions.
Part of our bonding time with the kids goes beyond the two meetings. We’ve invited many of them to come with us to church each Sabbath. One week we had four come with us! We’ve hiked, scootered, and worked on school projects with them. We’ve also had a chance to talk with them about some of their family struggles.
Jesus gave us all the example of how to love people. Our family prays that we can love these kids who are in our lives as Jesus would . . . as we teach them, work with them, play with them, and cry with them.
