Jesus began His public ministry not with power or applause, but with baptism, wilderness, and temptation. At the Jordan, His identity as God’s beloved Son was affirmed; in the desert, that identity was tested. Through both experiences, Jesus revealed the foundation of His movement: solidarity instead of status, obedience instead of shortcuts, and Spirit-led trust instead of control.
Before Jesus spoke in public, gathered disciples or healed the sick, the ground was prepared. This preparation was not rushed. It unfolded quietly, faithfully and often in obscurity. John the Baptist stood at the threshold of this—the final voice of preparation, the bridge between promise and fulfilment.
Jesus spent His teenage years and early adulthood in obscurity. Nazareth was small, easily overlooked, and Jesus was known not as a prophet or teacher but simply as “a carpenter” and “the carpenter’s son.”
By the time the magi—often described as “the wise men”—arrived, Jesus was no longer the newborn of Christmas cards or nativity scenes, but a child, already growing into the rhythms of His Jewish people.
While they were there (in Bethlehem), the time came for her baby to be born. Luke 2:6. He came to us as a baby. The Gospels begin here. Not with power, miracles, or crowds, but with vulnerability—with the breath of a newborn in the arms of his young mum.
