When she was released from prison, she needed a place to stay. Unfortunately, her husband had died while she was in prison, and she had nowhere to live.
“Mother, why did this happen to me?” Deborah asked her mother again and again.
Father didn’t know. Mother didn’t know. ZZ didn’t know. ZZ watched from the back seat as Father and Mother looked for the keys.
“God,” Grandmother Brigitte prayed, “please don’t send rain because we live here and will get wet.”
Grandmother Brigitte opened the letter and read, “We just found out that we have to give you this additional payment.”
He looked up at Mother and Father with great determination on his tiny face. Stamping his feet on the ground, he yelled, “I don’t want to go to the other school!”
Father didn’t like the sound of that. “You are not going to go to the Adventists,” he said. “You are going to study at an Adventist school.”
“Why do we have saints in our church, and they don’t have saints in their church? Why do we baptize babies when they are born, and they do not?”
“Our Father,” Teacher said, “please help Denisa to calm down and to understand that it is better to play with the other children and not only with Timeea.”
As he listened, the words made sense for the first time. He understood that the seventh day of the week, Saturday, was an important day.
Before, Daria played in the mud all day and was always dirty. Mother used to have to tell her, “Wash your hands, wash your hands.” Daria always used to say, “No!”
