What happens when you notice someone’s missing?  That’s what happened when Waldensian Student Alex* realized he hadn’t seen his classmate Dan in a while. “I haven’t seen Dan for over a month,” Alex told his wife, Maya. “He just stopped coming to class. I hope he’s OK.” When Dan finally returned, Alex was relieved. After class, Dan caught his eye and asked, “Can we talk?” Dan opened up about his deep depression—so bad that he’d tried to end his life three times. Since childhood, he’d struggled with overwhelming responsibility, loneliness, and hopelessness. Alex listened. He wanted to share the hope he had found in Jesus but sensed the need to move gently and prayerfully. That evening, he told Maya what Dan had shared. She said, “You have to tell him he’s loved—truly loved. What if he tries to end his life again? Don’t wait!” Alex agreed. He invited Dan over, and soon the two were meeting every Sabbath to study the Bible. After a while, Dan asked Alex whether he wanted to study with a bigger group at church. He said he’d love to. One afternoon, Dan said quietly, “You know, Alex—you saved my life. I’ve met Jesus, and I want to follow Him.” Today, Dan lives in another country in the region, but he and Alex stay in touch and continue to study God’s Word together. Through Alex’s care and courage to share his faith, Dan’s life was saved—first from despair, and then for eternity. The clock said 2:30 AM. Sarah* found it hard to go back to sleep. She paced her room, listened to a sermon, and read some Bible passages. After being awake for two hours, she finally prayed, “Lord, what do you need me to do?” She felt impressed to share a Bible verse with Fatma, a girl she’d been giving Spanish lessons to, and who had become a close friend. Fatma had become very discouraged after taking a difficult Spanish exam and had withdrawn from her friends. Sarah grabbed her phone and messaged Fatma. The two met the following week, and Fatma told Sarah that she had been depressed for several days. “That night was very difficult. I went to bed crying. But then I woke up and saw your message, and that verse brought peace to my heart.” Sarah is a Waldensian Student. The first time she introduced Fatma to the Bible was when she read the verse of “God is love” on her phone. They now practice their Spanish by reading the Bible on their phones. Fatma’s favorite story is the one about Ruth. Sarah says, “God is moving in this area, maybe not with massive baptisms but through friendship and love. Veiled Country: A Message of Hope

The following story was written by a Waldensian Student in the Middle East and North Africa region. We’ve withheld their identity to protect their ministry.  My story began in 2016 during my last year at university. Some of you might know from anecdotes or personal experience how difficult it can be to be a Seventh-day Adventist student at a university where they do not know about the Sabbath. Well, believe it or not, this challenge brought me to where I am today: a missionary serving in the 10/40 Window. My final exam was scheduled to be held on a Sabbath. I did everything I could to change it: wrote letters, met with coordinators, went from office to office. They all refused my request, saying that I should be flexible in my beliefs and that God would understand this one time. I knew that this wasn’t just the ultimate exam for my graduation but also a critical test of my faith. On that Sabbath morning while at church, I pleaded with God for answers, but answers didn’t come just then. However, I promised in faith that I would be a missionary wherever He wanted me to go if He would allow me to graduate that same year. Well, He answered that prayer. Now here I am, fulfilling my promise to Him! Serving as a Missionary I served for two years as a missionary teacher in Central America. Now I’m serving in the Middle East and North Africa Union (MENA) as a missionary to the students at the university where I’m enrolled, in the tradition of the Waldensians in the Middle Ages who pursued secular activities as a vehicle for preaching the gospel. Being in a foreign land is challenging. You miss your family, your home country, and your friends. You also have to adapt to a new culture, the people, the climate and so forth. The only thing that you can count on is the unchanging love of God, and the promise He made to be with you always. With this perspective, things go smoothly. Universities are amazing mission fields. You meet people your own age, you easily make friends, and you have many opportunities to share God with open-minded, inquisitive people. I’ve been serving God here for a year, and I can see His hand working in my life and the lives of my friends. When I look back at all the Sabbath challenges I had at the university three years ago, I understand why God allowed me to go through them. He was simply preparing me for what I’m going through now. Again, I have “problems” concerning classes and exams on Sabbath, but I no longer see them as challenges. Rather, I view them as opportunities God is granting me to share my faith. Several times I’ve been asked why I don’t attend classes on Sabbath. Answering these questions always ends with discussions about God, His creation, and the Bible. For a whole year, I didn’t go to classes on Sabbath, but I was still able to get good grades. My classmates were quite surprised. When scheduling the yearly exams, the university administration put two important exams on Sabbath. The only way the dates could be changed was for all my classmates to agree to move them. All of them agreed to the schedule change just for me! The administrators were surprised that the other students agreed to the change. They all understood how important it is to me to keep the Sabbath, and I know that God is planting some seeds here and there. I’m so grateful to God for His ways of working. Fatima My friend Fatima* and I met at a Christmas party, and we became good friends because we both like to cook (and also to eat)! We began sharing cooking tips and recipes, and then one day, she invited me for lunch at her house. We had a conversation about our beliefs and values, many of which we had in common. We began doing things together socially, and today I’m almost part of her family. They invite me every week to spend time with them. Her parents met mine, and now our families know and trust each other. But the amazing part is how God is working in Fatima’s heart. The first time I went to Fatima’s house for lunch, we talked about God, especially about the Sabbath. She was surprised to hear about my beliefs and how a person of my faith could have so many values in common with someone of her faith. As we continued talking, she decided to join our small group for vespers on a Friday, mostly out of curiosity. She loved it! We gave her an Arabic Bible and a Sabbath School quarterly so she could follow our study and even share her thoughts about it. It’s amazing how she switched from seeing the Bible as something corrupted by human hands to an amazing book that she wants to read every day. Now Fatima often comes for Sabbath vespers or Sabbath morning services. These experiences are just a few of the many where I’ve seen God working through me as an instrument. Praising God I praise the Lord for church members who faithfully contribute financially to the mission in MENA. We thank you for giving generously to support modern-day Waldensians who preach and live the gospel in challenging environments. When I found out that I’d be a Waldensian student in a veiled country, I began to pray for my future classmates. On the first day of school, I made a new friend, the only woman in the room wearing traditional clothes. Her name was Mariam.* The next day, I sat next to her, and we chatted together. She asked me whether I had any friends at the university. I told her, “Yes, I have you !” She was really happy. Later I learned that she didn’t have many friends in the class or at the school before I came. As time passed, Mariam became my closest friend at the university. She even said that I was like a sister to her. Mariam and I were taking a public speaking class together, and we had to make presentations in front of the class. She chose to give a speech on the similarities and differences of major world religions. Mariam asked me to help her prepare the presentation, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to discuss my faith with her. She told me twice that she was interested in reading the Bible. I told her that I would look for one for her. One day Mariam expressed that she’d never met people as kind as the other Waldensian Students and me, that we were totally different from other people. She also said, “Juliana, I want to be like you.” I was so shocked because I knew that I had a lot of weaknesses in my character and often made mistakes. The only thing that came to my mind to answer her was, “Mariam, I make a lot of mistakes, but I try each day to follow Jesus’ example. He was good with people and in everything He did when He was here on earth.” After that conversation, my personal relationship with Jesus began to change. When I read the Bible, I wanted to learn more about Him and to be more like Him. I just wanted others to see the love of Jesus in me. One weekend, Mariam invited me to her house. Little did I know that I was about to experience an incredible miracle. For four days, I became a part of Mariam’s family. Even though her family was of another faith, I decided that I had nothing to hide and that I would be myself and live my faith. So, I did everything that I normally do: spent time with God in morning devotions, prayed before meals, and kept the Sabbath. One night, Mariam and I were in her room. I saw her holy book sitting on the little table beside her bed. I asked to look at it, and we started to have a wonderful conversation about faith. We were able to talk about the Creation story and about the plan of salvation. “Mariam, would you like to read about these stories in your very own Bible?” I asked. “Yes!” she responded. And then I presented her with a Bible in her language. She took it with her hands and hugged it. She was so happy! I was shocked about that, but then I reasoned that the Holy Spirit must be working in her heart. Later that night, before going to sleep, I stepped out of the room, and when I came back, she wasn’t there. And the Bible wasn’t there either. I was so worried. After a few minutes, Mariam appeared in the room and told me that she showed the Bible to her parents. Now I was really worried and thought to myself, I won’t be sleeping in this house tonight! But, unexpectedly, she told me that they were happy and thankful for the gift. I was so relieved and praised God silently. What an incredible miracle! The next day, I returned to school. That week we had to make our presentations in front of the public speaking class. As Mariam began her presentation about different religions, she spoke confidently. Before, she was very shy and would read directly from her notes. But this time, she didn’t look nervous at all. When we finished our presentations, I told Mariam that she did an awesome job! I asked her how she managed to present so well. She said that it was because she was reading the book that I’d given her. Later that week, she told me that she was reading the story of Jesus and really liked it. She had read about 10 chapters. I’m sure that God is working in Mariam’s life. Please pray that Mariam will keep reading and continue to allow the Holy Spirit and the Bible to transform her life. When I found out that I’d be a Waldensian student in a veiled country, I prayed for my future classmates. It’s typically not safe to share Bibles here. To my relief, she told me that they were happy for her and thankful for the gift. I was overjoyed, and I praised God silently. Rosanna* is a nurse with a passion for sharing Jesus with those who need Him most. She and her husband, Gunther, a doctor, help operate a mobile health clinic in a large city in the Middle East, where they minister to the needs of thousands of refugees who can’t afford medical care. One day, the couple received a call from a man who asked them to come see his wife right away. Rosanna and Gunther made their way to the couple’s apartment and listened in stunned silence as the anxious man shared his story. Seven years ago, his wife, Nasima, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a recurrent inflammatory and progressive disorder of the central nervous system, which had caused visible damage to the entire left side of her body. The family was not only dealing with her physical illness but also facing the heavy economic costs associated with medical treatment, as well as the psychological trauma of having to flee from their homeland during this difficult period. About this time, Nasima slowly entered the room. Covered in a white veil, the only thing they could see was a small, puckered face filled with pain. “It took a lot of convincing on our part to persuade Nasima to allow us to conduct a simple examination,” Rosanna said, “because in this part of the world, it’s embarrassing to expose oneself, especially to a foreigner.” Rosanna and Gunther decided to admit Nasima into their care. Her medical costs would be covered by the project while she received the physical and psychological treatment she desperately needed to recover. The next week, Rosanna began therapy sessions. She remembers the first time Nasima removed the veil that covered her head, spilling out her blond, disheveled hair. Closing the door, Rosanna asked her to lie down with her head toward the lower end of the bed. “My first goal was to stretch and rebalance Nasima’s skeletal muscles to help reduce the inflammation,” Rosanna recalled. “I started with her head and neck, but it hurt her so much, she immediately urged me to stop.” Rosanna didn’t know what to do because without these treatments, there could be no progress. She decided to pray for wisdom. “God, I don’t know what else to try,” she pled. “Please use my hands to glorify your name. Please guide them to bring your healing!” During the next couple of weeks, the idea slowly came to Rosanna that if she couldn’t alleviate Nasima’s pain, she could at least try to make her feel beautiful. On one visit, Rosanna carefully began to comb Nasima’s hair. Fortunately, Nasima could tolerate the pain the combing caused. It was difficult to unravel the tangles, but Rosanna’s gentle work relaxed Nasima’s tense body, and by the end of the combing session, she had fallen into a deep and peaceful sleep. After she woke up, Nasima stood in front of a mirror and smiled. Until now, there had been a wall between the two women, largely due to language and cultural barriers but also because of the respect Nasima had for the medical profession. Rosanna realized that she was becoming Nasima’s friend. Since that day, God has shown Rosanna methods for treating Nasima’s body and soul. “Now, if I’m late, she teasingly asks me why,” said Rosanna. “We pray before every therapy session, and I never leave their house without an ‘I love you’ in Nasima’s recently learned English.” Nasima and her husband have invited Rosanna and Gunther to eat with them many times and have given them gifts from their hearts. God in His mercy has allowed Nasima’s health to improve in some ways, and she is now experiencing very little pain. Please pray for the ministry of Rosanna, Gunther, and their team as they provide physical healing for their patients and lead them to Jesus for the spiritual healing that only He can bring. * Names have been changed. He pointed out that many religions have their own holy book. Before I could reply, Celik* spoke up, sharing what he had learned in his personal studies. Burhan and Celik were attending our weekly Bible study for the first time. I was surprised to hear that Celik had studied the Bible before. Many of our local and university friends don’t know much about the Bible, which isn’t unusual in this closed country. That’s why my fellow “Waldensian Students” and I came here: to quietly share Jesus at this university. We’ve been blessed to see our new friends growing more interested in God. Somehow, our conversation that night turned to Seventh-day Adventist beliefs about the Bible and Jesus’ soon return. Each participant asked questions, eager to understand. Finally, Burhan said, “I want to learn fully about your faith. I want you to teach me from the Bible and help me learn.” Since then, I’ve been studying the Bible regularly with him. middle east and north africa union mission Sunny and Salma met during the orientation for first-year students at a university in the Middle East. Sunny, who is from Asia, is a “Waldensian Student”—a young Seventh-day Adventist living, studying, and serving at a secular university in the Adventist Church’s Middle East and North Africa Union Mission. Salma is a local student who grew up in a non-Christian family. The two women shared the same major and lived in the same city neighborhood, and they quickly became friends. Salma soon learned that her new friend was an Adventist Christian. She had been taught to be wary of Christians, but Sunny seemed very kind and honest. As their friendship grew, Salma accepted an invitation to attend a Friday evening meeting in Sunny’s home. Salma met other young Adventists at the meeting, and she liked the friendly conversation. Soon she began to enjoy singing hymns and praying with the group every Friday evening. Near the end of the first school year, Sunny invited Salma to visit an Adventist church where 95 percent of the members were international students. Salma accepted, but she faced harsh criticism from her family and friends for doing so. “What did you do there?” one asked. “Does this mean you’ve become a Christian?” another demanded. Family members warned that they all would be cursed if she became a Christian. “It was a hard experience for me, and it made me worry,” Salma said. But she didn’t stop going to church. She even joined the youth choir and participated in health seminars. Her Adventist friends prayed for her. One Friday evening, the group watched a video about Jesus’ life, and Sunny noticed that Salma’s attitude began to soften. To Sunny’s amazement, Salma asked to study the book of Acts. “I was surprised because Salma hadn’t been interested in Bible studies for about a year,” Sunny said. Salma studied the Bible weekly with Sunny, but she had no desire to be baptized. She was worried that her family would be cursed if she became a Christian. One Sabbath at a women’s ministries retreat, Salma participated in an activity where each woman had to select a heart-shaped card and meditate on the Bible verse written inside. She prayerfully chose a card and opened it. Inside, she read, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you and your household will be saved” (Acts 16:31, MEV). She didn’t need to worry about a curse falling on her family. She stood up and announced with a trembling voice that she wanted to accept Jesus as her Savior and be baptized! It’s stories like Salma’s that inspire Sunny to continue serving as a “Waldensian Student.” “After I finish my studies, I plan to stay in the Middle East to develop lifelong friendships with people like Salma,” Sunny said. “That’s about the only way we can touch the hearts of many people who don’t know Jesus in this region. The 10/40 Window is almost a catchphrase in mission work. “Send more missionaries to the 10/40 Window!” “Give to 10/40 Window mission projects!” “Help us reach the 10/40 Window with the gospel!” Perhaps you’ve heard similar requests before. Maybe you barely “hear” them anymore because you’ve heard them so often. Yet it’s for good reason. The 10/40 Window contains nearly 60% of the world’s population and most major world religions. About 3 billion people living there are unreached by the Word of God. Our 10/40 Window project remains crucial in spreading the gospel. Some projects meet specific needs. For instance, the Myanmar project offers help with drug addiction, and “Waldensian Students” spread the gospel behind the scenes in closed countries. Of course, there are needs outside the 10/40 Window too. Colombia is a predominantly Christian country, but only 1 in 193 are Adventist. Global Mission pioneers are needed to plant churches and spread hope to more people. Southern Africa is also mostly Christian, but pioneers there need the right tools to share the Advent hope. “And the gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14). In the “Waldensian Student” program, students live, study, and serve in universities in restricted access countries to quietly win fellow students and faculty for Christ. A small group of “Waldensian Students” reached out to their friend Aisha*, who was interested in spiritual conversations. After studying the Bible with them for several months, she was baptized and excitedly shared her faith with her mother. Later, her mother also became a believer but was afraid to tell her husband. This newfound faith brought Aisha’s mother emotional and physical healing from old wounds. Aisha’s father noticed these dramatic changes and asked her about it. Finally, she bravely opened up to him about her relationship with Jesus. She told him how Jesus was healing her in miraculous ways. Instead of getting angry, Aisha’s father was touched by his wife’s testimony, even crying as he listened to her stories.
