Mission Refocus and the Three Challenge Windows
Mission Refocus is a bold movement to redirect our church’s resources toward areas of the world where Seventh-day Adventist presence is limited—or absent altogether.
As you walk through the streets of some cities around the world, the presence of the Seventh-day Adventist Church feels almost natural. You may pass billboards promoting Adventist schools, drive by Adventist hospitals extending the healing ministry of Jesus, or see signs for multiple Adventist churches across town. Turn on the television, and Hope Channel may appear alongside mainstream networks. It is common to have a Seventh-day Adventist neighbor—or several—living in your neighborhood. In these places, the church is visible, accessible, and woven into everyday life.
But the global reality tells a very different story.
If the world’s population is divided into two equal halves—about four billion people each—the contrast is striking.
96 percent of the world’s Adventists live among the first 4 billion, where the church is well-established.
Only 4 percent of Adventists live among the remaining 4 billion, in regions where Adventist presence is minimal or nonexistent.
This reality is represented in the mission map below. Large regions appear in lighter and darker tones, reflecting places where Adventists are few, widely scattered, or absent altogether. In some countries, entire populations are served by only a handful of believers. In others, there is no recorded Adventist presence.
These regions are not forgotten by God. They are home to people who live, work, raise families, and search for meaning—often within cultures and worldviews where the story of Jesus is unfamiliar, misunderstood, or has never been personally encountered. The challenge is not simply about information, but about presence, relationship, and witness.
This is why the church must look beyond where it is strong and intentionally turn its attention to where the need is greatest—opening its eyes, its heart, and its resources to the places where the gospel has been hardest to share and the Adventist presence remains smallest. The Mission Priority System (MPS) is a strategic planning platform that helps mission stakeholders evaluate and prioritize projects based on people groups and locations where the need is greatest, guiding funding decisions and focus areas so that the church’s mission resources align with the urgency of reaching the unreached.
