The Dorm of Hope
Wednesday, September 9, 2026 What began as a simple dormitory became a place of transformation. In Cambodia, the Dorm of Hope is helping students receive an education, discover Jesus, and build a brighter future.
Global Mission pioneers are ordinary people, church members who answer God’s call to go where the gospel is needed most. They build relationships, plant churches, and share Jesus in practical ways, often in areas that have never heard the good news. Their work is challenging, but through faith and perseverance, they bring hope to forgotten communities. One such pioneer is Vann. In 2016, Vann became a Global Mission pioneer in the northeastern part of Cambodia. His journey wasn’t easy. As a young student seeking a better education, Vann attended English classes at Banlung City Church. After being baptized, he finished his studies, got married, and moved back to his village. Cut off from the church by distance and lack of transportation, his spiritual life declined as he focused on farm work. It wasn’t until 2016, when the church needed help due to the illness of a pioneer leader, that Vann was called. At first, he felt unqualified and tried to avoid the call. But with encouragement from fellow believers, he returned to a struggling church, where only three families remained. Seeing the need, Vann accepted God’s call to serve. Vann’s mission was to reach a local tribal group of youth who lived up in the mountains, far from the city, but desperate for education. For them, education is often the only way to a brighter future. As a Global Mission pioneer, Vann helped establish a dormitory near the church, a safe place for students to live, study, and worship together. They called it the Dorm of Hope. The dorm allowed them to attend school regularly at no cost, join church activities, and grow in faith. "I have been staying here for two years. What I love most about this dormitory is, first, I get to learn about Jesus. Second, it helps me with the cost, because I can stay in the dorm for free. Lastly, we have church members, elders, and pastors who support me—not only in my studies, but also in my relationship with God." —Bunny The dorm became a vibrant center for education, discipleship, and community. Students participated in daily worship, Bible studies, English classes, and outreach programs. Many were baptized, and the church grew stronger. "The program that I like the most here at Banlung City Church is evangelism. While there are many activities I enjoy, evangelism is very special to me because it’s the time when we reach out to our neighbors and people in the community, so they can learn more about Jesus." —Phoeurng The Dorm of Hope is more than just a building. It’s a place where lives are transformed. "The main reason I came to this church is because my family is poor. We don’t have much money, and when I needed to attend high school in the town, I needed a place to stay. This church offered me a dormitory, a safe place to live while I study. But it’s more than just lodging; the church also helps me with my studies and even supports some of my school expenses." —Samorn Please pray for Global Mission pioneers around the world, and for the work being done here in Cambodia. Wednesday, August 26, 2026 The Kakima Adventist Church provides a worship experience both in spoken language and Kenyan Sign Language. Emily brings her son to the Kakima school, and both of their lives are transformed.
In rural western Kenya, worship at the Kakima Adventist Church brings together both deaf and hearing believers in a way that’s united and welcoming. At the church, spoken language and Kenyan Sign Language are used side by side, every member is valued, and worship is defined not by sound, but by connection. Today’s message comes from a deaf Adventist pastor, whose sermons in sign are voiced for hearing members. The church is closely connected to a school for deaf children, a project that took root years ago when Global Mission helped launch it by sending four Global Mission pioneer teachers. One of those pioneers, Lydia, is still faithfully serving there today. "I thank God because I’ve seen His mighty hand work in this institution." —Lydia Through this school, families from the community are encountering God in surprising ways. Emily learned that her son, Jabulani, was deaf when he was three years old. She searched for a school where her son would be accepted. Too often, she was turned away. She took her young son to Kakima School, simply hoping he would receive an education. "The very first time we came to this school, this was the only school Jabulani accepted to step down from my back. And he ran, and he was so happy. And I told my parents, ‘This is the school.’" —Emily Jabulani began discovering faith and joy through what he was learning at the school. "I love going to church." —Jabulani They weren’t Adventist, but one weekend when Jabulani returned home, he insisted they attend church on Sabbath, the day he had learned about in class. Curious, Emily began going to church on Saturday, wanting to understand what her son was experiencing. As she worshiped, met the members, and studied the Bible for herself, she felt God leading her. Over time, she embraced Adventist beliefs and chose to be baptized. What began with a child’s simple conviction became a journey of transformation for his mother. "By the time I was coming out, I knew I was a changed person and my life would never be the same again." —Emily "I feel happy that my mom comes to this church." —Jabulani Along the way, Emily found more than faith. She found friendship, forming a close bond with Lydia. Stories like theirs are part of what makes Kakima special. It’s a community where deaf and hearing members grow together and where families find faith. Snowy Night's Prayer
Wednesday, August 19, 2026 A fun night of sledding leads to a missing headlamp and a prayer to Jesus.
Winter had arrived in Austria, and white snowflakes fell thick and fast outside the window. Amelie was very happy—it was the first snow of winter! “We just have to go outside!” Amelie exclaimed. It didn’t matter that it was already dark. It didn’t matter that the girls were already dressed in their pajamas for bed. Amelie wanted to go outside and jump up and down in the snow. Tamia and their mother agreed—it was a marvelous idea! Everyone quickly changed into their ski pants and warm winter coats. The girls’ mother strapped lights to the girls’ heads, then put one on her own. The two girls and their mother bounded out of the house. After locking the door, the three of them began to jump in the snow. Up and down, up and down they jumped. It was so much fun leaping through the white fluff! Then their mother pulled out the sled. It was a beautiful dark-red sled that could fly down hills very fast. All three climbed a hill by the house. Then, the girls sat on the sled, and their mother gave them a push. Whee! With a scream of delight, the girls flew down the hill. But they didn’t want to wait for the sled to reach the bottom. That would be boring. So, they purposely fell off as the sled zoomed downhill. Yay! That was fun! The girls and their mother climbed the hill again, and—whee!—down they flew. Once again, before reaching the bottom, the girls tumbled off the sled on purpose. Their mother ran beside the sled. Amelie was glad she was there. The night was dark, and the snow was falling fast and heavy. Even with her headlamp, Amelie could barely see. Suddenly, Amelie realized something was wrong. She reached up and touched her forehead—her headlamp was gone! She had no idea when it had fallen off. She had been having so much fun that she hadn’t even noticed. “Mother!” she cried. “My light is gone!” Amelie and Tamia’s mother wasn’t worried. She said they could look for it in the morning. “It’s OK,” she said. “Let’s go back home. It’s getting late.” Still, the girls wanted to look for the missing light. They revisited every place where they had fallen off the sled. No light. “Mother,” Amelie said. “We have to pray.” Their mother thought that was a good idea. So, she and the two girls stood under the falling snowflakes while Amelie prayed. “Dear God, please help us find the light,” she said. Then they opened their eyes and immediately saw something. At first, no one recognized what it was. Was it the headlamp or something else? They looked closer and saw something even more important than the light. Lying in the snow was a set of keys, including the house key their mother had used to lock the door when they went out to play. How the keys got there was a mystery. But Amelie knew one thing: without the house key, they would have been stuck outside in the cold snow for a very long time. If she had waited even a little longer to pray, the keys might have been buried beneath the thick snow, and they wouldn’t have found them. God had answered her prayer—just not in the way she expected. He had helped them find something even more important. The Surprise School
Wednesday, August 12, 2026 In Setúbal, Portugal, plans were underway to build a new school when God provided an even better opportunity.
History, community, and deep-rooted traditions are some of the most significant foundations of Portugal’s culture. From its coastal cities to its quiet neighborhoods, families here place a strong value on education, not just for knowledge but also for character. Just south of Lisbon, in the city of Setúbal, one small school has gained trust in the community. "Our school has existed in this city for more than forty years. It began inside the church building, in classrooms underneath the church. As the school grew, the space became too small, and we knew we had to look for another solution." —Angela In 2023, plans were underway to build a new school with support from the world church through the 13th Sabbath Offering. But soon after, another opportunity appeared. "We had a plan to build a school on a plot of land with 1,500 square meters. But God gave us something far greater, a school with 10,000 square meters." —João Instead of building from the ground up, a full school complex went up for sale just in time to purchase. "We went from a very small space to suddenly receiving this gift of 10,000 square meters. It was a blessing." —Angela Throughout the years, this school has impacted many lives. One former student was so shaped by her experience that she now returns to teach music classes each week. "I was once a student here, and now I’ve returned as a teacher. Coming back to my roots means so much to me. Back then it was a very small school, but it felt like a family. That environment shaped me deeply. The values they taught us about God helped shape who I am today. They helped me become a better person." —Raquel The extra space now offers children the opportunity to play, explore, and learn. "Before, the children had very little space. Now they are surrounded by nature and space and for them, it is a joy to come to school. We don’t just teach knowledge. Above all, we teach children about the love of God." —Marta "Only about ten percent of our students are Adventist. That means this is truly a missionary school. Wednesday, August 5, 2026 This throwback story highlights the beginnings of the first Luzeiro mission boat on the Amazon.
In the Amazon, villages lay hidden deep in the jungle, reachable only by days of travel through unpredictable waters. Leo and Jessie Halliwell arrived in Brazil in 1921. After several years of service in the northeast, they took a new assignment in the Amazon region. As they traveled, the couple began to understand how isolated many river communities were, especially when it came to medical help. So, in 1930, they built a boat and called it the Luzeiro, which means light bearer. It wasn’t large. It wasn’t fancy. It carried medical supplies, simple instruments, Bibles, and two missionaries willing to live on the river. For months at a time, that boat became their home. They slept in hammocks and endured the heat, insects, and sudden storms. When the Luzeiro rounded a bend before a village, word spread quickly, and people gathered at the shoreline. Malaria was common. Infections and tropical diseases were widespread. Jessie, a trained nurse, treated patients and delivered hundreds of babies during her years of service. Leo navigated dangerous stretches of river and organized the growing work. River communities came to rely on them. They kept coming back. Year after year, throughout the 1930s and 1940s, they traveled great distances along the Amazon. Villagers who had once been suspicious began waiting for the sound of the engine. Children who had been treated grew up remembering the boat that brought hope. It’s estimated that the Halliwells treated some 250,000 patients. Their mission became a life of compassion, carried along by the current. The Halliwells chose to say, “I will go,” and in the future, others would join them. As the work grew, more boats were built, each one carrying medical care and the message of hope to new communities. Today, Luzeiro boats are still traveling the rivers of northern Brazil, continuing the same kind of medical missionary work that began with one small vessel. Through a Pioneer’s Lens
Wednesday, July 29, 2026 Paulo was trying to figure out how to reach people in Zanzibar when he discovered that his camera might be the perfect way.
There’s a moment before many photographs are snapped. A smile. A nod. Global Mission pioneer Paulo learned that those small moments could open real conversations on Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania where he served. When Paulo first arrived, he understood something quickly: trust would really matter in Zanzibar. Here, relationships grow slowly, and only when people feel safe. Instead of trying to gather crowds, Paulo looked for a way to meet people one at a time. This work often calls for creativity. On Zanzibar, that creativity took the shape of a camera. "It was the Spirit of God who gave me the vision of working through the camera." —Paulo Paulo offered to take people’s pictures. The camera gave them a reason to stop. But it wasn’t the photographs that mattered most. It was what happened after. Conversations stretched longer each time, and trust began to grow. Photography opened doors, and slowly, Paulo’s circle of friends grew wider. "This camera has really helped me reach so many people in Zanzibar." —Paulo People who might never have spoken to him before now felt comfortable asking questions. Not about the camera, but about more personal things, like his faith. "They asked me a lot of questions. I took a lot of time to answer their questions." —Paulo The camera wasn’t the only way Paulo connected with people. As relationships grew, neighbors began to trust him in practical ways. When a child in the community was seriously injured and there was no ambulance, Paulo used his car to help get the child to the hospital. He didn’t ask for anything in return. He simply helped. "They said, ‘Can we pay you money?’ I told them no." —Paulo Paulo didn’t do this work alone. His wife served alongside him, welcoming people into their lives. "I thank God because His Spirit guides me, and I only want to do His work." —Mfarijo Through their consistency, Paulo and his wife were able to make deep connections within their community. Global Mission pioneers work intentionally. They know the language, the customs, and care for the people around them. On Zanzibar, Paulo discovered that sometimes connection doesn’t begin with a sermon; it begins with a camera and a conversation. Wednesday, July 22, 2026 Free Sabbath breakfasts led to many baptisms and a discipleship program that's focused on retention for the new members.
Imagine waking up, expecting a long day of work, but there’s no food for breakfast. In Papua New Guinea, this is the reality for many—rising early, heading out with empty stomachs. But in one village, something extraordinary began when a ministry saw this need and turned hunger into hope. "Basically at 5 to 6, everybody rush to go to work. So yeah, that was the opportunity that we actually thought that we can actually minister through feeding. So we decided sharing meals for free during the Sabbath." —Sam This is considered a low-income area, with many residents facing daily struggles such as food insecurity. At first, reaching people here seemed difficult. But as meals were shared, everything began to change. More people were reached, and new opportunities opened to build relationships and serve. "So it started to build that interest so people came, we gave them food and eventually praying for them. And when we eventually went into praying for them, they actually requested if we can actually do Bible studies. That's the whole thing that actually ignited the discipleship movement here in Koki." —Sam Seeing how effective this outreach was in early 2022, the team strengthened their efforts using the South Pacific Division’s Garden Model—a five-phase approach to disciple-making: preparation, seed planting, cultivation, harvest, and multiplication. This led to more than 400 baptisms, and after PNG for Christ, another 700 joined, boosting the membership of Koki Adventist Church. This church has a remarkable retention rate because of its discipleship hub. "What we have here in the Discipleship Hub is to ensure that the members that are baptized during the harvest and during the PNG for Christ are kept separately from the church. But we provide the support and foster those care and love them that we can actually grow with them. The Discipleship Hub runs the program for only 1 hour, that basically covers only for nurturing and fostering on those new members. So here we have about 400 to 500 church members coming to Sabbath every Sabbath during our programs here." —Sam Now, in this discipleship hub, five adult Bible groups and two youth groups meet every Sabbath at the local government basketball court. The church dreams of acquiring this land to build a discipleship hub with facilities for health, education, worship, and fellowship for more than 600 members, supporting church planting and disciple-making in the community. Wednesday, July 15, 2026 Tamia's mother accidentally locked her in the car without any way of opening it back up! She prayed and someone special came to the rescue.
It was a very hot summer afternoon in Austria when Tamia’s mother accidentally locked her in the car in the parking lot of a supermarket. They had gone to the supermarket to fill the refrigerator with food. After shopping, Tamia’s mother placed Tamia in her child seat. She needed both hands to fasten Tamia’s seatbelt, so she threw the car keys into the front seat. When she did, it’s possible she accidentally pressed the car-lock button on the keys. Or perhaps the button was pushed when the keys landed. Nobody knows. But when Tamia’s mother closed the rear door and tried to open the front one, she discovered all the car doors were locked. Tamia’s mother then remembered her purse with her cell phone and money was in the trunk. Everything was locked in the car: her phone, her money, and, most importantly, her little Tamia. Tamia’s mother ran back inside the supermarket. She knew only one phone number by heart: Tamia’s grandmother’s. She asked a supermarket worker to borrow her phone. The worker handed over her cell phone. Frantically, Tamia’s mother explained the situation to the grandmother and asked her to call Tamia’s father. Maybe he was nearby and could come help. But the grandmother soon learned that the father was very far away. Still, Tamia’s father wanted to help, so he called a roadside assistance service. But they said it would take more than an hour for anyone to arrive. Tamia’s mother was devastated. Because it was so hot, Tamia was turning red inside the car. Tamia didn’t understand why it was so hot and why her mother wasn’t in the car with her. She was crying loudly. Her mother prayed. “Dear God,” she said. “Nobody is here to help me. Only You can help. I really need Your help now.” Opening her eyes, she saw a yellow car pulling into the parking lot. Roadside assistance cars are often yellow. Some people even call the drivers “yellow angels” because of their cars. She was so surprised. Could it be a yellow angel? She looked more closely. It was! Tamia’s mother ran to the yellow car, crying, “I need help right now! My little girl is locked in the car!” A man jumped out of the yellow car. He grabbed some equipment from his trunk and rushed over. In just a few moments, he had unlocked the car and freed Tamia. Tamia was so happy to be with her mother again. The man thought that the only reason he had stopped at the supermarket was to eat a sandwich. But Tamia’s mother knew better. She knew that God had sent him there to rescue Tamia. “You really are a yellow angel today,” Tamia’s mother said. Wednesday, July 8, 2026 Villa Aurora, the Adventist University of the Italian Union, is a beloved haven for its students, but the facilities are becoming inadequate for its growth. Please consider giving to the 13th Sabbath Offering to help with renovations.
In the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by rolling hills and Renaissance beauty, sits one of Italy’s most historic cities. Florence is known for its art, architecture, and centuries of history. Just outside the city center, nestled among trees and overlooking the Tuscan countryside, stands Villa Aurora, the Adventist University of the Italian Union. Founded as a theological seminary in 1940, Villa Aurora has grown into a center for theological study, cultural exchange, and spiritual formation for students from Italy and around the world. "Schools are not only factories for pastors. They are places of reflection, expanding thought and of developing theological and cultural thinking." —Gioele For the Adventist Church in Italy, a union of fewer than 10,000 members, Villa Aurora plays a vital role. One of the historic campus buildings is in need of renovations to help provide more rooms for students. The renovation comes with unique challenges. Many of the campus buildings are part of a protected 14th-century villa, which means every update must preserve its historic structure, increasing both cost and complexity. Wednesday, July 1, 2026 From Portugal to Bulgaria, the Inter-European Division utilizes the mission opportunities that education creates.
Stretching from the Atlantic coast of Portugal to the Black Sea in Bulgaria, the Inter-European Division spans more than 20 countries across Southern and Central Europe. Rooted in a rich Christian heritage, the region is largely shaped by secular culture and post-Christian values. Across this diverse territory, the Seventh-day Adventist Church operates more than 120 schools, serving more than 10,000 students, from kindergartens to university campuses. In classrooms across Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal, and beyond, faith is woven into daily learning. Education here is not only about academics. It’s also about mission. "We strongly believe education is about redemption, about restoring God’s image. So we integrate faith into all the classes that we do in the different areas of the school, so that our students can grasp the hope and the message of the gospel in class in every matter that they study." —Daniel "With time I understood that education and mission go hand in hand. It is essentially one and the same." —Maria In many of these schools, like Sagunto Adventist Campus, most of the students aren’t Adventist, but they still come because they’re looking for something deeper than knowledge. "This gives us an opportunity to have a mission field here. Even though not everyone agrees with what we believe, they still bring their children here because they value what we teach." —Daniel "Even though we do not have many children from Adventist families, I can reach many families and plant a little seed in the heart of each child, and in the heart of each family, about the love of God." —Marta Some families drive long distances to bring their children to an Adventist school because they see the impact of Adventist values. Maria commutes two hours to bring her son to the Adventist kindergarten in Sofia, Bulgaria. "Every minute in the traffic, every kilometer, I'm happy to do this for my son to come here. It's really special. I felt the spirit here, the spirit is extremely special." —Maria The impact of Adventist education is seen not only in classrooms, but in homes too. "They pray for the very first time in the kindergarten and they take this practice home with their families. A child asks, ‘Aren’t we going to pray first? Let us pray.’" —Maria In Florence, Italy, students live and study together, preparing for ministry and service. "In an Adventist campus, you get to experience a whole package. You kind of live and experience a lifestyle, and it’s also a safe place to share doubts, questions about what you believe, and to grow." —Nicolo Church leaders across the division emphasize the connection between education and the future of the church. "I think that the development of Adventist education and the development of the church, those two things are mutually connected. If you invest in education, you are investing in the future development of the church." —Milan "If the church wants to be present and influence society beyond preaching, schools are a foundational pillar of this action." —Gioele Across Portugal, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, and throughout the Inter-European Division, Adventist education continues to shape lives. "The image that they got from here was a loving community. And the impact was so great that they brought their kids. And now their kids are bringing their kids. So this is very inspiring to see the community being transformed by education and see how the project is working in the lives of the people that go through Sagunto." —Daniel In a secular continent, education remains one of the best methods of ministry. The School That Rescues Girls
Wednesday, June 24, 2026 Eunice was terrified of what awaited her at home, so she asked her teacher for help. Her teacher helped her, and now she's at Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Centre, a place that has given her hope.
When Eunice was only ten years old, her future was already decided for her. She was expected to undergo a traditional cutting practice, and soon after, marry a man nearly 50 years old. It was a future she didn’t choose and didn’t want. Terrified of what was coming, Eunice did the only thing she could think to do. She told her teacher at school. "I was feeling so bad. That’s why I had to share with my class teacher. To rescue me." —Eunice Instead of being sent back home, Eunice’s teacher brought her to safety and began searching for a place where she could stay permanently. That search led to the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Centre, started by the Women’s Ministries group in Nairobi. "The Women’s Ministries noted that these girls are really suffering, and they decided amongst themselves to set up a small children’s rescue center, at least to be helping these kids." —Daniel What began as a small rescue effort for Maasai girls in Kenya has grown into something much larger. Today, Kajiado is not only a place of protection—it’s home. "Today we have over 250 girls rescued. They’re staying here. They board here. This is their home. Even during vacation they have nowhere to go." —Daniel In addition to finding safety, the girls at Kajiado experience community. They study, eat, and worship together. Many arrive having lost trust in those who were closest to them. Here, they find teachers who protect them, caregivers who listen, and friends who understand their story because they’ve lived it too. Over the past few years, much of the school’s physical transformation has been made possible through the support of Maranatha Volunteers International, whose teams helped build classrooms, dormitories, and essential infrastructure. Eunice has now begun to imagine a future shaped by hope instead of fear. "When I came to this school, I did not know how to read the Bible. I didn't even know whether God existed. But now, I know more about God, and it has really changed my life." —Eunice Encouraged by teachers, strengthened by faith, and supported by friends who believe in her, she’s begun to see her life differently. "I’m hoping and even have more hope about life—that after my studies I will go back to my society. I will help those who are in need, all my fellow girls who are in the same situation which I have undergone." —Eunice Eunice understands exactly what her life might have been if no one had intervened. "If I would not have been rescued, then I think I would be a mother of five kids." —Eunice While the campus now looks established, the daily needs inside these walls are urgent and ongoing. "These students lack food. They lack food completely." —Daniel "These children need food, clothes, the basic needs, the learning material." —Daniel The girls here do not pay school fees. Many are orphans. Others ran away to escape dangerous situations. There is little funding for these basic needs. This quarter, the 13th Sabbath Offering, also known as the Quarterly Mission Project, will support the work of the Kajiado Adventist School and Rescue Centre. Your contribution will equip this school to care for these children. When you give, you are sustaining a home for them. You are healing relationships. And you are helping girls like Eunice grow up surrounded by care, dignity, and hope. Because when one girl is rescued and supported, the future changes—not just for her, but for generations to come.
