Mission Refocus: The View from the Three Windows

Mission may not look exactly like how you’ve always pictured it. Adventist Mission has three focus areas—windows—that help us see where the world needs Jesus the most.

It’s easy to assume everyone has heard the story of Jesus, but when you look a little closer, that’s not always the case.

Across the world, there are people still searching for fulfillment.

For some, the name of Jesus is completely unknown. They’ve never heard the gospel. There’s no church nearby; no one to share the story of who Jesus is. For them, it’s not a matter of choosing to believe or not; they just never had the opportunity.

For others, the story is more familiar, but it’s distant. Christianity may have once been a large part of their lives, but over time that connection has weakened.

Different experiences; the same need.

Mission Refocus helps us see more clearly where the need is greatest so we can turn our attention toward those who are still waiting.

More than three-and-a-half billion people today are considered unreached. That’s roughly ten times the population of the United States.

When we consider where these people are located, it’s helpful to group them into three windows.

The 10/40 Window stretches from North Africa across the Middle East and into Asia, where entire people groups are still waiting to hear the name of Jesus for the very first time.

The Post-Christian Window includes places where the story is familiar but no longer informing lives, where faith has faded into the background.

And the Urban Window includes rapidly growing cities where people are surrounded by crowds yet often feel unseen and disconnected.

Different places, different challenges, but all part of the same mission we’ve been called to.

So let’s meet people not just with buildings in their neighborhoods, but with ourselves, our presence. Let’s create relationships and share hope with those who need it most.

This is what mission looks like. More relational than you would think. Because whether the story of Jesus is completely unknown or forgotten, the need is still the same.

We’ve heard it said that the gospel will reach the whole world. And yet, so many are still waiting.

Maybe this is what it means to see more clearly, to care more deeply, and to turn our attention to the people who are still waiting.
