In the flow of everyday life, it’s easy to pass by places without seeing what God is doing in them.

In Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, a group of Seventh-day Adventist church members felt called to do something new: plant a church where there wasn’t one before. They wanted to create a place where faith could grow and people could find hope and belonging.

Reaching people in cities like Montevideo presents unique challenges. Many residents live in a secular environment where faith holds little appeal. Interest in spiritual things is often low, and people tend to live more isolated from one another. It takes time and patience to build trust and create meaningful connections.

“People aren't very receptive, but it’s possible, because God sometimes surprises us.”

Sonia and Cesar were part of a larger Adventist church in Montevideo when they felt a burden for their own neighborhood. Along with others from their congregation, they stepped out in faith—starting with opening their homes for children’s groups, which led to Bible studies. What began small soon became a growing community.

As interest increased, the need for a dedicated space became clear. That’s when the global church family stepped in. Through the 13th Sabbath Offering, members from around the world helped provide the support needed to establish a permanent church home.

Today, the La Teja Adventist Church is active in its neighborhood—offering worship, sharing Christ’s love, and caring for those around them in practical ways.

“If the Lord allowed this to become a reality, I hope that we can truly be a light… that we can see this place filled with people who come to know Christ.”
