In the Solomon Islands, families like William’s face daily battles with hunger and malnutrition. See how your 13th Sabbath Offering is bringing practical help, nutrition education, and hope—giving children a chance to grow strong and thrive.
The sun rises over the Solomon Islands, marking the start of another day for William’s family. Five-year-old William wakes in their home, smiling despite the challenges he faces. His mother, Indy, and father, Alister, begin their daily routine–just like countless other families in the city.
“We start with breakfast, do our chores—cleaning the house, running errands, and looking for work to earn some money. That’s it.”
William’s life has been difficult from the beginning. Born by cesarean section due to complications, he soon required surgery to correct a deformity in his leg. His parents hoped this would improve his life, but the challenges didn’t stop there. Malnutrition has weakened his muscles, leaving him stiff and struggling to walk. His parents dream of giving him an education, but that feels increasingly out of reach. Sadly, William’s story is not unique–malnutrition is an urgent problem affecting many families across the Solomon Islands.
“Malnutrition is a very big issue for the country. But severe acute malnutrition, the one that quite more interestingly, it has a cause where, you know, is the nutritional issues. If this is not addressed from even from early infancy to up to five years of age. And, this is an age group that is vulnerable to develop severe acute malnutrition if they do not, address the nutrition properly at the time.”
Though Alister and Indy do their best to provide William with healthy food, their limited income makes it difficult to feed him properly.
“Life has been extremely difficult for us as we care for our child, William. My wife has to stay with him and provide constant care, literally 24/7. Meanwhile, I go out looking for casual labor to earn money. William cannot be left alone because he is unable to move around on his own. Without supervision, he risks falling and injuring himself. This means my wife is completely restricted—no gardening, no other activities—her sole focus is caring for William.”
In the Solomon Islands, malnutrition is not only a result of poverty, but also of limited knowledge about proper nutrition.
“But the bigger problem I see is ignorance, the mother's ignorance on what to do or how to care for the children, like preparing, proper food and good food. Money contributes to the issue of not having them, having not enough good food to be able to feed the children. But I feel that if we can address the issue of ignorance first, I think that can be then go then could go a long way for us being able to address this problem.”
Your 13th Sabbath Offering this quarter can transform lives by providing training, resources, and hope for families in need here in the Solomon Islands. Together, we can help children like William grow strong and healthy, giving them a chance to build a brighter future.
“Thank you for your support towards this project in the South Pacific Division. God bless every one of you.”
